It’s been a while (um years!) since A Self Sufficient Life was updated and a lot has changed for the Dirty Boots Gang.
The big news (well for us at least) is that we’re no longer residing on a Spanish mountain. Instead we’re enjoying the rolling hills of the English countryside. Self sufficiency is no longer quite so obvious or indeed imperative, as life is mostly “on grid”.
We are however, still very much self reliant. Working from home to pay our way and ensure we enjoy life to the fullest without relying on the whim of bosses in suits. Plus we quite like to employ our own physical effort to get things done around the house (new boilers apart) and garden.
This left us with a bit of a conundrum. Would it be okay to still write a site like this?
We’re not living miles from civilisation any more, and we’re not completely skint like when the site was but a twinkle in Mr DB’s eye! On the other hand, we’re still very much interested in doing things for ourselves. Plus, we’re still very tight frugal, and since we’re finally settled in our new home it’s time to start all over again with regards to helping to feed ourselves. This summer has seen our first batch of English hens incorporated into the new Dirty Boots Homestead (more on that shortly). And this autumn we’ll be gearing up for 2014 Veg Production.
Yes now the neighbours are somewhat closer, and chances are we won’t be getting snowed in any time soon. But that doesn’t mean we have to forget being a little more mindful about what we use, what we spend, and what we throw away. So why not keep going with A Self Sufficient Life?
Why not indeed? We never were perfect “knit your own yogurt” eco-warriors anyway.
Bum – now I guess I have to update the about page…
welcome back! I look forward to reading more about your new life 🙂
Thanks Liz – feels nice and kind of weird to be here again!
I look forward to read about your new life on the English rolling hills 🙂 Go for it!
we continue here in the Spanish mountains and try as much as possible to be self sufficient.
Thank you for all your earlier posts!
Abrazos de Trudis
Thanks Farmer Trudis and good luck with chicken house next month.
I was pleasantly surprised to look at the bottom of my Yahoo home page today and see 2 things newer than the same “Don’t You Just Love Freebies – Great Water Butt from Idealo – one year ago” that I’ve been seeing for, um, ever! (But I did not remove it from my feed –I knew you’d be back!) Great to hear from you again, and I look forward to more posts. :>)
Hey Nicola thanks for the lovely comment. Glad it’s not just me that hangs onto things in my reader “just in case”!
