Cheap Easy Meals
I shall be taking over a Self Sufficient life for the next few weeks. We shall be having a Cheap Easy Meals theme. Lately the Dirty Boots household has been going through an even more frugal period than usual. Much the same as the rest of the planet I imagine.
The lack of funds, combining with the end of winter and a time with less variety available on the vegetable plot has inspired me to come up with more cheap easy meals than usual. And, luckily (or not?) for you, I shall be sharing!
Cheap, Quick Healthy Recipes
Some of these cheap quick meals are vegetarian recipes or ones which include only a small amount of meat. These can easily be modified to become vegetarian recipes as the meat is only there for some flavour, not as a huge hunk of animal to be the star of the show.
We have rediscovered the adaptability and flavour of pulses. Although we always consume them regularly in a few dishes, the repertoire of recipes including these versatile providers of cheap protein has increased significantly.
As you may imagine, with border-line vegetarian recipes and lots of pulses many of the ideas I will share are quick healthy recipes, not just cheap ones! However, there will be some not quite so healthy recipes too. Nothing too heart-stopping, but definitely the odd cake or muffin!
Stay at Home, Take-Away Cheap Easy Meals
Since becoming expats we have developed a fondness for the British Takeaway (which we never really bothered with before). Absence definitely makes the heart grow fonder! I have a few ideas for cheap quick meals which pay homage to such British Takeaway classics as fish and chips, mushy peas, egg-fried rice & curry sauce.
Quick Healthy Recipes for Processed Foods
There are some things which most of us only every buy. Crumpets are my secret pre-packaged food sin. But, many of these items are popular because we ate them freshly made for such a long time before the processed version became available.
Some of the best quick healthy recipes are based around things which are staples for millions, but overlooked in the West. Things like chapattis and other unleavened breads.
Traditional Cheap Easy Recipes
One of the most important things for me, has been looking back to traditional recipes, which include fewer exotic or expensive ingredients. Also, these include ideas for saving fuel too, particularly when looking at war-time recipes.
Anyway, I just wanted to give you a little introduction to why the next batch of posts will be cheap and Quick Healthy Recipes from yours truly. All the recipes will be frugal ones requiring little equipment. Some may take a little time, but no hard work on your part!
For a more self sufficient future
Cheap… Marvellous!
Quick… Excellent!
Healthy… Oh ok, if you insist!
Frugal requiring little equipment… Sounds like you’re writing them just for me!
Some may take a little time, but no hard work on your part… Ok, now it’s just spooky!
Looking forward to reading the posts!
What a wonderful idea, and I look forward to this series! I’ve been thinking of doing something similar on Almostgotit.com. There are differences between American and British food sensibilities which will be fun to compare… I, for one, became VERY FOND of tuna and sweet corn and cheese on toast while living in Oxford! American counterparts would probably be mac & cheese (from a box, of course! about the cheapest quick food there is…) and “spaghetti” (meaning marinara sauce from a jar plus any kind of pasta one can find in the cupboard)
Jo, Now I’ve started writing, they’re not actually as healthy as they could be – I am fond of butter!
Almostgotit, Oxford – spooky I resided there as a small child – very nice! Sauce from a jar!!!!!! Dear oh dear!
