Well it’s definitely getting easier to waste less food. It’s becoming more habitual to think about any leftovers quickly. This week there have only been a few potato peelings and half a cup of cooked cous-cous wasted. They got fed to the animals so really a very good attempt at wasting no food. Well I think anyway.
I’m getting into the swing of creative thinking too. For example last night MrDB made far too much garlic bread so today I used it in a romesco sauce recipe. It worked a treat, tasted great, saved us cash and reduced our food waste. Result! Normally I would have given it to the dogs and used fresh bread in the romesco.
We’ve also had a tian made with half fresh rice and half leftover rice salad. It was a massive improvement and is definitely the way forward for our tians!
I’m trying a new approach so we don’t get too bored of leftovers this week. If anything significant is left over from a meal, we’ll delay eating the remains for two days. This means we have a day in between eating the same things and makes us feel like we’re not just eating things because we have too.
For a more self sufficient future
I’ll have to try the “two-day” rule here. My family tends to be less-than-enthused when I get very efficient and make too much of something at once… and then we really don’t want to eat that thing again for a LONG time.
Giving leftovers to animals isn’t a bad back-up plan, and means buying less pet food, at least. We also say that anything going to our compost bin is not quite an entire loss, as it will be recycled into next season’s fresh veggies…
